Glendalough

The round tower of Glendalough is one of the tallest in the country. The conical top had been struck by lightning and was reconstructed towards the end of the 19th century.

The gatehouse above is the only one of its kind found in Ireland. Corbel stones in the walls indicate that there may have been an upper storey.

West doorway to the cathedral, above. Note how the lintel stone is strengthened by a stone arch above it.
