Reconstructed Horizontal Mill

Bunratty Folk Park, County Clare

This reconstruction is based on finds of wooden parts in a bog in County Cork, dating back some 2 000 years. Horizontal mills did not need gears to convert the vertical rotation of a mill wheel into the horizontal rotation of the grindstone. They were not very efficient. This mill will grind about 75 kilograms of corn in a day, though the amount is also dependent upon water pressure.
