Maize Meeting at Fernhill House Hotel, Clonakilty

11/04/05

This meeting was open to anyone interested in the production and value of maize. The Chairman of the meeting was John McNamara from Teagasc and the Guest Speakers were Seamus O’Mahony from Barryroe Co-op, Ken Daniels from Power Seeds and Sean McNamara from Bandon Co-op.

Seamus O’Mahony talked about the principles of growing maize. Ken Daniels focused on the different varieties, especially those on this year’s Recommended List and some new varieties and Sean McNamara spoke about the value of maize if it is incorporated into beef, spring calving and autumn calving systems.

The meeting proved to be highly interesting as well as very informative. It was especially useful for me as it gave me the opportunity to get some extra information on maize and also to meet some other people involved in the production of maize. The information I received and the notes I took I have incorporated into the appropriate sections throughout the project.
