Soil Preparation

Maize requires a very fine seedbed, as it is extremely sensitive to compaction. Therefore proper soil preparation is vital. The three practices are rotavating (sub-soiling), ploughing and harrowing. If the soils are very heavy they should be ploughed pre Christmas. A fast and uniform germination is encouraged by a very fine seedbed that has been prepared with a minimum number of passes with the harrow (good tines are essential).

For full details see the section on soil preparation on the page entitled ‘Reseeding’ in the Silage Project.
